Tierney Finstar is just about my favorite teenager in the world. When she is not taking the SATs or running for Student Body President (Her slogan: vote for tierney i’ll sprinkle you with glitter), this Los Angeles native is everywhere you would want to be but are probably not cool enough to go. We here at Diamond Dusted adore Tierney because she is a true original – she has a truly unique vision for herself and the world, an indomitable spirit, the most glamorous wardrobe, a true gift for karaoke, the best dance moves, she’s really, really smart, and she has a manager (Niko) and a TV show in the works.
Tierney is obsession worthy on every level. I recently interview her for Diamond Dusted and every single word out of glittery lips made me love her all the more.
DD&R: What inspires you?
TF: For one, I am most inspired by other teenagers who consciously attempt to not be lame. I find these hard to come by for the most part (even though I do love some select HS friends), with the exception of Niko Kar and Sky Ferreira who constantly blow my mind with their respective creative projects. Niko and I have been friends since the 7th grade so we have really push each other to consistently grow and experiment on all levels – whether it be fashion, writing, photography, or just developing who we are as people. I love art history. One of my favorite art pieces is Merit Oppenheim’s Luncheon in Fur just because it’s a crazy surrealist piece by a badass pioneer for women in art. Strong girls in all facets inspire me, whether they are Merit Oppenheim, Beyonce, Anna Wintour or the Posso girls. She’s not biologically a female, but I’m also obsessed with Amanda Lepore.
I can be found roaming the city with Niko at all hours of night most of the time. We usually end our adventures with getting picked up by my driver aka my father, who literally dons a chauffeur’s outfit to drive us when he’s feeling feisty, and hitting up Taco Bell at 3am.
One of the most influential mottos I follow is simply “Drink Dance”. Obviously I completely support not drinking, but for me believing in the power of drinkdancedrinkdance, otherwise known as genuine FUN in general, always leads to a good time. My love of dancing fun sometimes brings me lots of ridicule from my friends, who incessantly tease me for my guilty pleasure love of Tigerheat, the gay club where every well dressed girl is instantly made to feel like a princess. I just really love cheesy pop music and go-go dancers, plus the gay attention of course-and it’s not like i go every week. These passions also come to fruition in my constant trips to Korean karaoke parlors…lavishly decorated rooms, full catalogs of pop/80’s metal songs, and delicious kimchi all make me a happy girl. My specialty songs: Paradise City (Guns n Roses), Like A Prayer, and anything Britney Spears.
I take Karaoke to a new level in my “professional” music of course. I like to think I can work a crowd, and I love entertaining other people whether they understand what I’m doing or not, so I record slightly more sexual, inappropriate versions of popular songs and post them on my music myspace (Check out Tieney’s Myspace page here for a lot more Tierney). My latest track is called “Arseywood”, a play on the skewed language Niko and I speak to each other mixed with the classic Madonna song.
And the videos well..The New Season of It’s Totally Tierney, my internet reality show, begins airing in July and I’m hoping to be filmed and scheduled for more parties, the last i did was Sky Ferriera’s Sweet 16.
DD&R: What are your fashion inspirations?
TF: Fashion wise it’s all about the Grandma Glitter. There’s the Forever 21 wannabe glitter, the club girl ghetto chic glitter, and what I call the Grandma glitter. Highly embroidered/ bejeweled/designed in sequin anything make me happy- especially blazers and jackets, and of course ridiculous tank tops for summer. I get all my best items at thrift stores in the slums of the valley. Makeup is my most favorite aspect to any look though. Glitters, color pigments, face paints, and jewels on the face make me feel way cuter and the day or night just more fun.
I definitely feel like I balance living in two alternate universes even though i’m the same person in both.
Tierney!!! We love you!
Samantha
